Read-Only Connections: The Most Important Safeguard
The single most reassuring fact about a good finance tracker is that the connection to your bank is read-only. It can see your transactions and balances to display them, but it cannot move money - no transfers, no payments, no withdrawals. Even in a worst-case breach, there is no "send money" button to abuse.
These connections are brokered by regulated aggregators (such as Plaid and Teller) using tokens, so the app never stores your actual banking password. This is the standard that makes account linking safe - and it is worth confirming any tool you use follows it.
Encryption: Protecting Data at Rest
Sensitive data - like the access tokens that link your accounts - should be encrypted where it is stored, not held in plain text. Encryption means that even if the underlying storage were ever exposed, the contents are unreadable without the keys. It is the difference between a locked safe and an open drawer.
Passkeys: Beyond the Password
Passwords are the weakest link in most security - reused, guessed, phished, or leaked in breaches. Passkeys replace them with a cryptographic key tied to your device and unlocked by your fingerprint, face, or device PIN. There is no password to steal, and passkeys cannot be phished the way a typed password can.
If a tool offers passkey login, using it is one of the biggest security upgrades available to you, for almost no added friction.
Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second proof of identity beyond your password - typically a rotating code from an authenticator app. Even if someone learns your password, they cannot get in without that second factor. On any account holding financial data, turning on 2FA (or using a passkey) should be non-negotiable.
Questions Worth Asking Any Finance App
- Are account connections read-only, so the app can never move my money?
- Is sensitive data encrypted, and is my banking password never stored?
- Can I protect my login with a passkey or two-factor authentication?
- Can I delete my account and data if I choose to leave?
Wealthtron is built to answer yes to these: read-only connections through regulated aggregators, encrypted storage of sensitive tokens, passkey and two-factor login, and account deletion when you want it. Security is not a feature bolted on afterward - it is the foundation a finance tracker has to earn.
